What Is ADAS Recalibration After Windshield Replacement?

If your car has lane-keeping, automatic braking, or adaptive cruise control, your windshield replacement is not complete without ADAS recalibration. Here is why.

What Is ADAS Recalibration After Windshield Replacement?

You've had your windshield replaced. The glass looks perfect, the seal is tight, and the technician has packed up and left. But if your car has a forward-facing camera mounted near the rearview mirror — and most vehicles built after 2015 do — there's one more step that cannot be skipped: ADAS recalibration.

Skipping it isn't just an oversight. It's a safety risk. Here's what ADAS recalibration is, why it matters, and what to expect.

What Is ADAS?

ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — the suite of electronic safety features that have become standard on most modern vehicles. Depending on your car, these may include:

  • Automatic emergency braking (AEB) — detects obstacles and brakes without driver input
  • Lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist — alerts you or steers you back if you drift
  • Adaptive cruise control — maintains a set following distance from the car ahead
  • Forward collision warning — alerts you to an impending collision
  • Traffic sign recognition — reads and displays speed limits and other signs
  • Rain-sensing wipers — automatically activates wipers based on moisture detection

Most of these systems rely on a camera mounted at the top of the windshield, directly behind the rearview mirror. Some vehicles also use radar sensors embedded in the front bumper or grille, but the windshield camera is the primary eye for many ADAS functions.

Why Does Windshield Replacement Affect ADAS?

When your windshield is replaced, the camera bracket is removed and reinstalled on the new glass. Even a millimeter of misalignment — invisible to the naked eye — can throw off the camera's field of view enough to cause serious problems.

A camera that is off by even a small angle may:

  • Fail to detect a pedestrian or vehicle in time to trigger automatic braking
  • Misread lane markings and steer toward the edge of the road
  • Trigger false alerts, causing unnecessary braking or steering corrections
  • Fail to recognize speed limit signs accurately

The vehicle's computer doesn't know the camera has moved. It continues operating as if everything is perfectly aligned — which is exactly what makes an uncalibrated camera dangerous. The system appears to work normally until it doesn't.

What Is ADAS Recalibration?

Recalibration is the process of realigning the ADAS camera to the vehicle manufacturer's exact specifications after the windshield has been replaced. There are two types:

Static Recalibration

The vehicle is parked in a controlled environment — level ground, specific lighting conditions, a measured distance from a calibration target board. The technician uses manufacturer-approved software to align the camera to the target and confirm the calibration is within spec.

Static calibration is precise and works for most vehicles. It requires the right equipment and a controlled space, which is why not every glass shop can perform it.

Dynamic Recalibration

The vehicle is driven at a specific speed (typically 30–50 mph) on a road with clear lane markings while the calibration software runs in the background. The system uses real-world visual data to self-calibrate.

Some vehicles require dynamic calibration, some require static, and some require both. The requirement is set by the manufacturer and varies by make, model, and year.

Which Does Your Car Need?

Your CarLove Glass technician will determine the correct calibration type for your specific vehicle before the appointment. We use OEM-spec calibration equipment and follow manufacturer procedures for every make and model we service.

Does Insurance Cover ADAS Recalibration?

In most cases, yes — especially in South Carolina and Florida.

In South Carolina, comprehensive insurance covers windshield replacement at $0 out of pocket, and most policies include ADAS recalibration as part of the covered repair. In Florida, the zero-deductible windshield law similarly covers the full scope of the replacement, which typically includes recalibration.

We recommend confirming with your insurer before the appointment. When you book with CarLove Glass, we verify your coverage upfront and will let you know exactly what is and isn't covered before any work begins.

How Long Does Recalibration Take?

Static recalibration typically adds 30–60 minutes to the appointment. Dynamic recalibration requires a drive of roughly 20–30 minutes at highway speeds. In some cases, both are required, which can add up to 90 minutes total.

We factor recalibration time into your appointment window so there are no surprises.

How Do You Know If Your Car Needs It?

A quick rule of thumb: if your vehicle was manufactured after 2015 and has any of the following features, it almost certainly has a windshield-mounted camera that requires recalibration after glass replacement:

  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning or lane-keeping assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Forward collision warning
  • Traffic sign recognition

If you're unsure, check your owner's manual under "driver assistance features" or call us — we can look up your vehicle's requirements before you book.

What Happens If You Skip It?

The short answer: your safety systems may not work correctly, and you won't know until it's too late.

Some vehicles will display a warning light on the dashboard after windshield replacement if the camera detects it's out of calibration. But many will not — the system will simply operate with a misaligned camera and no indication that anything is wrong.

Given that ADAS features like automatic emergency braking are specifically designed to prevent accidents, an uncalibrated camera undermines the entire purpose of having those systems.

CarLove Glass ADAS Recalibration
